About This Calculator
FIRE — Financial Independence, Retire Early — is a movement based on aggressive saving and investing to achieve financial independence well before traditional retirement age.
FIRE Number = Annual retirement expenses ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate. The classic 4% rule (Bengen, 1994) states that withdrawing 4% of your portfolio per year has historically sustained a 30-year retirement.
Projection uses nominal returns (before inflation). To estimate real purchasing power, subtract the inflation rate from your expected return. The model assumes constant annual savings and a fixed return rate — real results will vary.
FIRE Variants: Lean FIRE targets minimal living costs; Regular FIRE matches your current spending; Fat FIRE gives you a comfortable buffer. Adjust your retirement expenses input to model any lifestyle.
