Tartan / Plaid Generator

Build a tartan from a sett — the list of threads that defines the cloth. Each colour repeats for a thread count, then the sett runs both across and down the fabric, and the crossings are woven with a real over/under twill so mixed threads blend to their average colour.

Turn the twill off to compare with a flat grid: identical colours stay solid, and every crossing collapses to the plain average of the two threads.

About this tool

A sett is read across the warp and down the weft, so every crossing of two threads is evaluated individually: matching threads keep their colour, differing threads average, and a 2/2 twill shifts the over/under diagonal one cell per row to reproduce the woven texture of real cloth. Widen a colour to two or four threads and you get the fine guard lines that make tartan recognisable. The whole fabric is rendered on an HTML canvas in your browser — nothing is uploaded anywhere.
