About this tool

Chord identification is a matching problem. This tool reduces whatever you play to a set of pitch classes, then tries every root note against every chord recipe in its database — triads, sixth, seventh, ninth, eleventh and thirteenth chords, plus the suspended, added and altered families. A chord only qualifies if it contains every note you played, and it may leave out one note of its own (almost always the fifth, which is the note players drop first). Exact matches are listed ahead of near matches, and where several names fit the same notes — C6 and Am7, for instance — all of them are shown. Because the lowest sounding note is tracked separately, the tool also tells you when you are playing an inversion and names it as a slash chord.

You can enter notes on the piano keyboard or from the fretboard, hear the result back as a synthesised voice, and everything is computed locally in your browser.
