Board actions

Mirror reflects the files left to right and swaps the colours, so the result is the mirror image of the position. Castling rights follow the colours and are dropped where they no longer fit the home squares, and an en passant target is cleared because a reflected pawn never just moved two squares.

The initial array: all 32 pieces on their home squares, White to move.

About this tool

The Chess Board Editor builds and edits chess positions: drag the twelve piece glyphs onto the board, move or delete them, load classic positions, edit all six FEN fields and copy the result as a FEN string or a PNG.

The legality check is real logic rather than a stub — it implements pawn, knight, bishop, rook, queen and king attack detection with sliding blockers, then flags impossible positions such as a missing or duplicated king, two kings in check at once, adjacent kings, pawns on the back rank, impossible piece counts, and castling or en passant fields that do not match the board. Everything runs entirely in your browser: no uploads, no accounts and no network calls.
